OCCS Bookkeeping

I'd like to see us get back in the habit of posting pre and after meeting information on the blog. This is, after all, one of the reasons we created this thing. The meeting host should at least post the pre meeting info on the blog, and ideally he should be the member putting up the after meeting info.

Pre meeting info can be as simple as the time, date, location, and featured cigar (makes it easier than digging through emails if we forget to put it on the calendar). After meeting info can be as simple as club notes (if any), maybe what movie we watched, what we thought of the meeting host's featured cigar, etc.

I'm looking forward to seeing the first Alcorn's Feature Cigar Review (for the August meeting) by Joe, and many thanks to Matt for getting this sweet deal set up.

Hope everyone is doing well.

  1. Excellent idea. I don't know why we stopped.

  2. I have no excuse for not making either post. I will happily smoke a Casa Fuego tonight and not only post about Friday's (August's) meeting, I will also review the cigar.

Speaking of reviews...since March's meeting where we put together our new cigar review criteria ther have been 5 cigar reviews...by two of us. That is about one per month and I know we all have more cigars than that. I was wondering why the reviews have been scarce. Should we re-evaluate our review criteria? Does our current methodology make the review process too lengthy/time consuming? Should we keep the criteria the same for our Alcorn reviews, but all of our other cigar reviews have a more simple review process (maybe a simple 'I had X cigar and it was terrible' or 'I had X cigar and it was good-go buy one')?

I really enjoy reading what everyone is smoking (whether it is old favorites, the same thing for 2 years straight, new stogies, good/bad experiences...).

What do you all think? Any suggestions for improving our review process, blog or anything else?

    Take care-
    Joe

  3. I am guilty of posting ZERO reviews under the new rating system, or any other sort of cigar review since instituting the new system. I have no excuses.

I enjoy reading the reviews using our new rating system for sure, and I think that our rating system is dead-nuts. That being said, and given the time and effort we put into devloping our own rating system, I see no reason a review cannot consist of a single sentence or thought for each of the point items. This may help those of us a little less inclined to write to get cigars posted on the blog. One could simply move down the outline of the OCCS rating and indicate the points he gives for each, with as little or as much description as he wants to offer.

Our rating system, in and of itself, is enough of a write up for me to know whether or not you enjoyed the cigar. This is not to say that you should "keep the reviews short and sweet" by any means, however, I don't think we should feel obligated to write a ton about a cigar should we not feel the urge to do so.

As far as the blog is concerned, I think we all do a great job of making changes and improvements as things progress. The blog seems to continue to evolve, which is just fine with me.

Given our new "sponsorship", we might consider extending invitations to friends that are less crazy about cigars than we are to simply become followers of the blog. The more people we have as followers (i.e. exposure), the better chance of sending some business Alcorn's way.

    Just my two cents.

  5. I think the full reviews are fine with only consisting of the rating of each section and maybe a little elaboration in the Personal/Overall Experience section...I may start doing this myself because what I have been writing takes around an hour to write. If a guy wanted to write a ton of information, more power to him, but there should be no need.

About new followers, what do you all suggest? I think all of the people I know that smoke cigars are followers already.
